Modern society is extremely permissive. In matters that are irrelevant to the functioning of the system/government, we can generally do what we please.
But in all matters deemed as “important”, the system/government tends increasingly to regulate our behavior; resulting in Socialism. Behavior is regulated, or controlled, often through indirect coercion or through psychological pressure or manipulation, and by organizations other than the government, or by the system as a whole. As most large organizations have some form of propaganda to manipulate public attitudes of behavior. This is easy, as most people also fit into a “herd mentality”; as repetitiveness can make propaganda seem authentic.
Propaganda is not limited to “commercials” and advertisements and oftentimes the creators of such are not even consciously intending them as propaganda. For example, the content of entertainment programming is a powerful form of propaganda. An example of indirect coercion: there is no law that says we have to go to work every day and follow our employer’s orders.
Legally there is nothing to prevent us from going to live in the wild, like primitive people or from going into business for ourselves. But in reality, there is very little wild country left and because of the economy as well as monopolized big corporate businesses, have squeezed out many small business owners; thus, can now survive by working for someone else. However, the kicker here is, that this oasis of “job security” has been inundated itself with layoffs and pay cuts.
There is often a repeated statement, “We must find a way to give people the opportunity to succeed.” This very statement takes away the value of the opportunity as opportunity implies having the means of achieving said success; I.E. loans, credit lines, etc. Destroyed by the fact that society gives it to them; welfare, food stamps, etc., the value of striving for yourself, whether you fail or succeed is compounded by the difficulties of minimal means of opportunity.
